Replacing a worn Hycrack tip
The best
way to remove the old tip is to grind or file two flats on opposite sides of the
tip taking care not to damage the main cone. Then lock the main cone from
turning by partly inserting a rod, nail or small bolt into the hollow pin that
secures the cone to the shaft so that it touches the base plate. Using a
suitable spanner that will fit the flats you have ground, unscrew the tip, which
has a left hand thread, in a clockwise direction. A tap on the
spanner is sometimes necessary just to break the initial tightness. Once
loosened the tip will usually screw out by hand. Remove your cone locking
device!
Alternatively you may find that the tip simply unscrews on application of gentle
heat.
Using a
glove, screw in the sharp new tip anticlockwise up to it’s shoulder applying a
little ‘Copperslip’ or grease to the thread to assist in future removal. Do not
grip the new tip with metal tools as this may damage it. The first use of the
machine in a log will tighten the tip. Do this carefully if the tip is not
yet up to the shoulder otherwise you may snap it!
